Yesterday, we made progress on a couple of important compensation-related articles and reached a tentative agreement (TA) on five articles. You can always read the exact language in our bargaining portal website.

Bargaining Highlights: Tentative Agreement on Overtime & Probation

  1. Probation: new language allows Temporary Research Staff employees to count time worked in that temp position toward the Probation Trial Period; this means that new Research Staff will have the full protection of the contract a lot sooner.
  2. Overtime: Research Staff can receive prospective overtime authorization instead of continuously checking in with their supervisors for Overtime approval, making it easier and more efficient for Researchers to get our work done.

Some of What’s Still On the Table

  1. Compensation: Research Staff presented a counterproposal for compensation where we re-emphasized the key element of our proposals and why it’s important for research staff to make a living wage. Our members cannot survive in Seattle with only a 1% salary increase for each of the next 3 years; this is not acceptable.
  2. Position Reviews: UW Admin is making movement towards us in creating timelines for processing Position Review forms for promotions. Too many Research Staff see this process stymied at the department level. We are still apart on how to get there, but we are fighting to make this process transparent and quicker.
  3. Grievance Procedure: UW Admin continues to propose changes to our grievance procedure that unnecessarily complicate it and make it more difficult to enforce our contract and reach a neutral third-party arbitrator.

Continuing to Build Power to Win!

To clearly communicate our remaining demands, we need to physically show up and show our anger and frustration. Your colleagues in HSB and Foege gathered yesterday to do a teach-in. Today, your colleagues from Harborview, Fred Hutch, and SLU gathered for a pre-strike picket. Collective action is what builds power at the bargaining table.

Members showed out in force for yesterdays teach-in at HSB/Foege!

Solidarity from today’s picket at South Lake Union!

More actions are planned across UW! To find and participate in the action for your college or school

One of the best ways to show UW our collective power is through membership. Already a member? You can ask 3 colleagues to sign up, too.
